A Friend and a Brother
“A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” Proverbs 17:17
I was blessed with four older brothers. Being the youngest girl with four older brothers is like having four personal bodyguards. Each one of them would defend me with his very life if necessary. We have been through some tough times together. I love my brothers so much. I know that my brothers will always be there to help me in my time of need.
The Bible says that Jesus is the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. As children of God, it’s so comforting to think of Jesus as our older brother. Jesus is there when we are going through tough times. And he would defend us with his very life if necessary. In fact, He did just that when he took the punishment for us on the cross. Like a brother, Jesus is always there to help in times of need. We can call on our older brother when times get tough.
But Jesus is not just a brother. He is also a friend. A friend is one who knows everything about you and still wants to hang out with you. With a true friend, you can be your authentic self because a true friend is always loyal. One of my favorite things to do with friends is to enjoy a meal together. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus says, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”
I am most thankful for Jesus, my elder brother, and my friend.
