A Good Foundation

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” Proverbs 9:10

Ask any contractor what the most important step when building a structure is and he will  tell you, “a good foundation.” He may go on to explain that foundations support the load of the entire building. A good and strong foundation keeps the building standing while the forces of nature wreak havoc. He may say that well-built foundations keep the occupants of the building safe during calamities such as earthquakes, floods, strong winds, etc., or that the foundation must be built such that, it keeps the ground moisture from seeping in and weakening the structure.

Proverbs 9 says that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. That means if wisdom was the structure, the fear of the Lord would be its foundation. The fear of the Lord is a reverential awe that is accompanied by love and hope. It supports the “load” of wisdom. The fear of the Lord is a good and strong foundation that keeps wisdom standing while the forces of this world wreak havoc. It keeps wisdom safe from calamity and keeps the ground moisture of this world from seeping in and weakening the structure. The fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

If you want your faith to stand, make sure you build it on a good foundation. Build it on the fear of the Lord.
