A Strong Tower
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.” Proverbs 18:10
Strongholds have been used throughout history as a place of refuge from enemies. When a band of marauders invaded the land, the inhabitants would gather up their meager belongings and retreat to the strong tower, fortified city, or castle set on a hill. To run to a strong tower was to flee danger and find a safe and secure place to take refuge.
The Bible says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower.” Throughout scripture we find names that exemplify the character of God and provide a place of refuge for us to flee from the enemies of life.
When we are threatened by the enemy of lack, we can run to God, whose name is Yaweh-Yireh - “the Lord Provides” (Genesis 22:14).
When anxiety and fear are closing in, we can run to God, whose name is Yahweh-Shalom - “the Lord is peace” (Judges 6:24).
When all others have forsaken us and loneliness is closing in, we can run to God, whose name is Yahweh-Shammah - “the Lord Is there” (Ezekiel 48:35).
Whatever enemy is pursuing you, call on the name of the Lord. Run to the name of the Lord to flee danger and find a safe and secure place to take refuge. The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous runs into it and is safe.
