At Rest in God
“I am at rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will never be shaken.” Psalm 62:1-2
Psalm 62 is a song of assurance, but it is sung against a backdrop of difficulty. This psalm sets the theme for much of David’s writing. Although trouble is brewing all around, David pens these words: “I am at rest in God.” To be at rest in God is to find peace in the midst of the storm. The Hebrew word implies a “still waiting.”
In Psalm 46, the Lord reminds us to be still and know that He is God (Ps. 46:10). Sometimes we have to step away from the chaos and remember that God is still in control. “So many enemies against one man—all of them trying to kill me,” David writes, but then he continues, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.” (Ps. 62:3,5)
How often do you and I pull aside from the adversity surrounding us and quietly reflect on the hope we have in Christ? Perhaps not often enough. This psalm of David is a good reminder that even when trouble is knocking at our door, God alone is our rock, our salvation, and our stronghold. Press into this unwavering hope, so that hopefully, like David, when you arise from your quiet place, you can confidently say, “I will never be shaken.”
