God is Close

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” Psalm 34:18

Emotional pain is real pain. It can be felt in our minds, our hearts, and even our bodies. Emotional pain can affect us physically. Have you ever been so upset about something that you felt sick to your stomach? In addition to stomach upset, emotional pain can cause headaches, muscle pain, or even pain in the arms or legs.

The pain of the brokenhearted can be intense in that it can be physical as well as emotional. One who is brokenhearted may feel as if he is all alone. But Psalm 34 shines light in the darkness.

When you are brokenhearted, God is not merely present—as someone who is there in the room, but He is near. He is close. He is right there with you, beside you, when your spirits are crushed. When you are down in the dumps, He is sitting down beside you. He gets what it feels like to be crushed in spirit. Jesus endured the loneliness of Gethsemane, the abandoning of friends, and the pain of the cross. He’s been there. He knows.

And He is there to rescue us. God sees the pain of your brokenness and comes alongside you to carry you through and restore your hope. He offers the gift of His presence amid your undoing to calm your weary soul and help you move forward.

For the brokenhearted, God is there. You don’t have to look far. God is close to you.
