He Bends Down to Listen

“I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT)

When my young daughter wanted my full attention, all she had to do was say, “Mommy, I need to tell you something.” I would put aside whatever I was doing and bend down so she could whisper in my ear. Sometimes the need would be a long and more serious matter, so I would sit down, take her in my lap, and listen as she explained all the details. Other times she would simply say, “I love you, Mommy.”

In those moments there was nothing more important for me than to bend down and hear what my child wanted to say to me. What beautiful imagery the psalmist paints of the Lord bending down to hear my prayers. Whether the need is a long and more serious matter or me just wanting to express my love for him, the God of heaven always hears my voice. He always takes the time to bend down and listen.
