How to Live
“But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
Jesus was in the wilderness fasting for 40 days and 40 nights when the devil appeared to Him, “If you are the Son of God,” he says, “tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” Jesus could have easily provided food for Himself that day or any day leading up to this encounter, but He doesn’t turn stones to bread, instead, he quotes scripture.
In Deuteronomy 8, Moses reminds the children of Israel about the time they were hungry in the wilderness, about how God allowed them to experience hunger to prove their character, to see whether or not they would obey his commands. Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 when he says, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
God wants us to know there is more to life than a full belly. We all need food to survive, but if you truly want to live, pay attention to His words. Proverbs 7:3 says, “Write them deep within your heart.” Allow the truth of God’s word to become part of who you are, and you will experience the life God intends for you to live.
