One Thing Remains

"As the Scriptures say, ‘People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.’ And that word is the good news that was preached to you.”1 Peter 1:24-25

Nothing lasts forever. At least that’s what they say. But there is actually one thing that does remain forever, according to 1 Peter, and that is the word of the Lord. It was by the word of the Lord that stars, planets, grass, trees, and fish came into existence. God spoke and it was done. And it won’t be undone until He says so. Hebrews 1:3 says, “He upholds the universe by the word of his power.” It is the sustaining power of His word that holds all things together. All things depend on Him for their continued existence. Jesus simply needs to say the word and everything would cease to exist.

Understanding the providence of God’s sustaining word should give us cause to be incredibly grateful. Every day we take for granted that life will continue as it always has, that we will continue to exist, continue to work, continue to play, continue to raise families, and continue to reach for our dreams. We fully expect that the sun will come out tomorrow because it always has.

Before your feet hit the ground in the morning, take a moment to bow in reverential awe before the Creator of all things who sustains them by the power of his word. Even “heaven and earth will pass away,” Jesus said, “but my words will never pass away.” We have a reason to be thankful for every breath and we should never live as if our tomorrow was a guarantee.
