Our High Priest

“Therefore, he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” Hebrews 7:25

I once heard someone say, “If you don’t see Jesus in the Old Testament, keep looking.”

In the Old Testament book of Exodus, God ordained the priesthood as a way for the nation of Israel to have a mediator between God and man. The role of the high priest was to intercede with God on behalf of the entire nation. Once a year, on the day of Atonement, the priest would go into the Holy of Holies and offer the blood of a perfect, spotless lamb as a sacrifice for the sins of the entire nation. This process had to be repeated again and again to save the people from the wrath of God against sin.

Through the priesthood, God was painting a picture of what Jesus would come to do for us. Jesus was that spotless lamb whose blood atones for our sins. But because of his unique position as Son of God and Son of Man, His sacrifice does not need to be repeated. He died once, for all. He is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. Jesus ever lives to intercede with God on our behalf, to plead our case before the Father so that all who come to God through Him will be saved from the wrath of God against sin.
