Promises

“And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.” 2 Peter 1:4

When I was a kid, we had a code of honor known as a pinky swear. We would hook the pinky fingers on our right hands together as we declared our sacred vow. The pinky promise was a solemn vow between friends that said you could be trusted.

The word of God is filled, page after page, with great and precious promises. But as you know, a promise is only as good as the one making it. If the promise-maker is reliable by nature, you know that the promise is reliable.

When Joshua was very old and knew that he would not be on this earth much longer, he called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel and he said to them, “Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!” (Joshua 23:14) Our promise-maker is a promise keeper.

As you read through the pages of God’s word, you will come upon many, many great and precious promises. Remember that God’s promises are trustworthy because God himself is trustworthy. You can count on him, in his time, to fully make good on every one of his promises.
