“Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’” Psalm 14:1

Every civilization since the beginning of time has sought someone or something to worship. There is a prevailing God-shaped hole in the hearts of humanity.

When the apostle Paul was visiting Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw all over the city. The people of Athens were desperately searching for something or someone to worship. As Paul was walking amid the altars, he came upon one with this inscription on it: “To the Unknown God.” Paul explained that the God they worshipped without knowing was the One True God he had been telling them about. “He is the God who made the world and everything in it,” Paul went on to say.

Paul reminded the people of Athens that creation itself demands an explanation. Creation speaks of a Creator. I visited the zoo this week with my family. There we saw Capybaras, a South American mammal that resembles a giant long-legged guinea pig. We saw several species of birds with colorful headdresses and at least three different types of crocodilians. I was intrigued to learn that there are more than 300 species of sharks in the world’s oceans. Creation is covered with the fingerprints of God. Just step outside on a clear night and lift your eyes to the night sky. Walk along the ocean shore as the waves pound against the sand. Lean in as you listen to the distinctive call of the whippoorwill.

Soon you will conclude, as did the psalmist, that only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”
