The Right to Become Children

“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

Did you catch that? What an astonishing thought. Unbelievable. Mind-blowing. God gave me the right to become his child. He gave me the right. I didn’t earn it. I don’t deserve it. Even his own people rejected him, but I believed. And because I believed and accepted him, he gave me the right to be part of his family, the right to sit at his table, the right to receive his inheritance. I can hardly wrap my mind around that.

I think about my own children. They are grown now, but I still cherish every moment I have with them. I’m so proud of them. They are a blessing to me. My daughters are not perfect, but they are perfect to me. I love and cherish both of them. I am most delighted when I hear them call me mom. Is this how God feels about me?

I have rebelled against him, sinned against him, and defied him, yet he has made a way through faith in Jesus for me to be welcomed into his family. As his child, I long to bring honor to his name, to live as he desires me to live, to love as he loves. I am incredibly thankful that God me gave me the right to become his child, to be part of his family.
