Send Anger Running
“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare..” Proverbs 15:1
The Bible tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry (James 1:19). Yet the temptation to fly off the handle during a confrontation often lies just below the surface. It can be challenging not to let the fact that we are tired, not feeling well, or under stress dictate how we respond when confronted with anger, but harsh words only make matters worse.
Anger is a strong emotion. When someone is so angry that they cannot listen, it’s probably not a good time to argue your point anyway. A gentle answer deflects anger, according to Proverbs. There is something about a quiet demeanor that creates a calming effect.
God blesses the peacemakers. (Mt. 5:9) Peacemakers diffuse and disarm volatile situations. Rather than engaging an angry person in a battle of wits and words, try disarming them with kindness. A gentle answer can send anger running.
