Taking a Stand

“But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.” Psalm 59:16

In Psalm 59 David is writing about how his enemies come out at night, prowling like dogs scavenging for food. Then he says, “But as for me.” Four words that can change everything. David is saying, “I’m not going to be like my enemies. I’m not going to live my life in misery and pain. I’m going to stand up for what I believe in. As for me..”

Throughout scripture we hear that same declaration repeated. Joshua takes a stand while some are turning to false gods. He says, “But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Job had suffered great loss and was trying to sort through the pain when he declared, “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives.” “But as for me, God will redeem my life,” writes the psalmist in Psalm 49 while reflecting on the fate of the wicked. 

Every one of us will face “But as for me” moments in our lives - those times when we are called to stand out from the crowd, to stand against sin, to stand for what we believe. May God give us the strength and courage to declare those four words that have the power to change everything: “But as for me.”
