The Lord Will Provide

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” Psalm 23:1

In the Old Testament book of Genesis, God tested the faith of the patriarch, Abraham. God told Abraham to take his only son, Isaac, and offer him up as a burnt offering. Issac did not know that he was to be the sacrifice, so when they arrived at the place the Lord instructed, he asked his father, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham replied, “My son, God will provide.” 

Moments before Abraham was to sacrifice his son, the Lord showed him a ram, caught in a thicket. After offering the ram as a burnt offering instead of his son, Abraham called the name of the place, Jehovah-jireh, which means the Lord will provide. The writer of Hebrews tells us that Abraham was so sure of God’s provision, he believed that even if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. 

David says In Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” Like Abraham, David trusted God to provide his needs. There were times when David lived in the palace. There were times when David lived in caves. David’s plight was often uncertain, but one thing David was always certain of: God would provide his needs. 

God will provide for you as well. If you are trusting in your job, your skills, your smarts or your good looks to provide for your needs, you are trusting in temporary things that have a way of being shaken. But if your trust is in the eternal covenant-keeping God, your provision is unshakable. Your back may be against a wall, but you can trust Jehovah-Jireh. Like Abraham and David, you can be certain that the Lord will provide.
