The Night Sky

“And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day there will be one Lord—his name alone will be worshiped.” Zechariah 14:9

Is it possible for us to know God?

Step outside and look at the night sky. If you live in the city, you might have to get in the car and go for a little drive. With the city lights in the rearview mirror, pull over at a roadside park. Get out and look up. What do you see? What you see is endless. A stark black canvas sprinkled with countless stars, constellations, a silvery moon, planets, meteors, a vast expanse of shimmering wonders slowly repositioning as the night wears on. You are looking at the fingerprints of God. Romans 1:20 tells us:

“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” 

According to Romans, it’s not only possible for us to know God, but because of the night sky, we have no excuse for not knowing God. And yet, instead of looking into the night sky and worshipping the Creator, we turn our hearts to other gods. Idolatry is more than just the worship of things that are made. It’s anything that is more important to us than God. In our culture, people worship at the altar of money, identity, entertainment, comfort, and relationships.

One day Christ will return as king over all the earth. In that day, we will no longer worship things other than God. There will be one Lord and his name alone will be worshipped.
