The Thing I Seek the Most

“The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.” Psalm 27:4

If you could have one thing, what would it be? What is the thing you seek the most? Would it be some gift God could give you? Some provisions you lack? The answer to a prayer? Or would it be God Himself? Sometimes we are so caught up in the demands of life that we fail to see the obvious. We need God.

We need God — not as a means to an end, but God Himself. The emptiness in our hearts can only be filled by His presence. It’s what we were designed for. Yet most of us miss it. David understood. “The one thing I ask of the Lord,” he says, “the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections.” Some translations read “to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.” Do we view God as useful? Or do we see Him as beautiful? Are we looking for what He can do for us? Or are we looking for who He is to us?

The things God can do for us will never fully satisfy us. God alone can satisfy us. God alone is enough. How I long to long for His presence! To gaze upon His beauty!  I don’t have to look far to find him. “If you look for me wholeheartedly,” God says in Jeremiah 29:23, “you will find me.” Yes, I too get caught up in my own needs, desires, and lack, when all along the one thing that can satisfy me the most is right in front of me.
