The Way

“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

On the eve of Jesus’ crucifixion—the greatest crisis the disciples would ever face, Jesus and the twelve celebrated the Passover together. Jesus washed the feet of his beloved friends, including the one who would betray him, who then left the room. They finished the meal as Peter swore his allegiance, but Jesus predicted Peter’s denial. And now Jesus was comforting them with these words: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” Then he tells them, “You know the way to where I am going.”

Confused by this statement, Thomas questioned, “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus replied, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Jesus wasn’t giving them GPS coordinates. He was giving them a theological lesson. He was about to be crucified, buried, rise from the dead, and ascend to heaven. As his time in the flesh had come to an end, Jesus was pulling back the veil. He was leaving them with foundational truth that would be the crux of their message to the world. This is the same simple message the world today still needs to hear:

Jesus is the way. Jesus is the only way to God. There is no other way to the Father except through him.

Jesus is the truth. In a world where “my truth,” one’s non-negotiable personal opinion is substituted for actual truth, Jesus is still the truth. He is the source and standard of truth, the One revealed in Scripture and in creation. A sure foundation on which to stand.

Jesus is the Life. Jesus is not only the way to life eternal, He is the source of life itself. When we come to Him, He gives us life that can never be lost.
