The Light That Leads to Life

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12

My husband and I were watching TV earlier this evening when the electricity went out. We sat there for a few minutes. I was thinking my eyes might finally adjust, but there was no light whatsoever. We just sat there in total darkness. I thought about this verse.

A friend of mind recently preached a sermon on “The Variable of Light.” He pointed out that darkness is a constant. The variable is the amount of light that is present. For instance, you cannot say, “Turn up the darkness.” You have to turn up (or down) the light. You can have more or less light, but darkness remains the same. That’s because darkness is the absence of light.

The bible uses the term darkness to indicate a life that is void of a relationship with God. Ephesians 5:8 says, For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord.” As human beings, darkness is our default mode. But Jesus said, “If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness.”

Jesus is the variable of light. You and I have been called out of darkness. We can walk in the light because Jesus is the light of the world. When you follow Him, you will have the light that leads to life.
