Easy Button

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33 

In 2005, the office supply company, Staples, launched a marketing campaign featuring the “easy button.” The idea was that you could press the “easy button” and all your office supply needs would be met in an instant. Staples’ “easy button” became somewhat of a cultural icon. We enjoy their tongue-in-cheek approach because we all want things to be easy. 

But the reality is, they seldom are. Some are looking for an “easy button” when it comes to faith. We want to embrace the easy parts of Christianity, but not the full message of the Gospel or biblical teachings. We like Bible verses that make us feel good, that speak of happiness and blessings, but Jesus said, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” In Matthew, Jesus says, “The gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” (Mt. 7:14)

Life is full of unpleasant twists and turns. Sadness, sickness, sorrow, poverty, and death are rampant. And if you’re paying attention, you know that it’s not getting any better. But even amid life’s trials and sorrows, Jesus says there is a place where your troubled heart can find peace. And that’s in Him. “For he himself is our peace,” Ephesians 2:14 says. Jesus overcame the world. He went up against the final enemy — death itself and overcame the world when he rose from the grave.

The many trials and sorrows of this world have no hold on Jesus and when you find your peace in him they can no longer have a hold on you. It may not be the “easy button” you are looking for, but trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior, turning the reigns of your life over to Him, and letting Him sit in the driver’s seat is the most rewarding thing you can do with your life. Although not everything is easy, in Him you will find the peace your heart is longing for.
