Drawn to the Light
“All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants” John 3:20-21
I was a very curious child and therefore quite the challenge to my mother. Mom says that I was disciplined more by the time I was five years old than all four of my brothers were their entire lives combined. Sometimes she would find herself sitting at the kitchen table crying when my dad would come home from work, “There must be something wrong with me,” she would tell him. “All I do is discipline that child.” But after hearing what I had done, my dad would put his arm around her and say, “Sounds to me like she needed it.“
I think I turned out pretty good despite all my antics. Because of my mom‘s loving persistence and gentle correction, I eventually came to the light and learned that it was best to do what mom wanted.
My journey with the Lord was a similar one. I spent years hiding in the darkness lest my sins be exposed. But I soon realized that God is a loving Father. He is light and in him is no darkness at all. In the light of his love he forgives completely. When we are in right relationship with God, we are drawn to his magnificent light. When we do what is right, we come to the light so others can see that we are doing what God wants.
