Don’t Worry

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33

Corrie Ten Boom once said, “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” I remember a time when my girls were little. We had been going to a new church and they made friends with the pastor’s kids. One Saturday afternoon the pastor asked if the girls could join their family to see the circus in a nearby town. The girls were very excited for the opportunity.

The girls and I were never apart much. After they had been gone for several hours I began to have a few crazy thoughts. I didn’t know the pastor and his wife very well. What if they were not really who they said they were? What if this was all a plan to kidnap my children? Now, I know that sounds ridiculous, but that’s my point. Worry is ridiculous.

You might not be worried about someone stealing your children (by the way they were returned safe and sound later that afternoon), but we often worry about other insignificant things that Jesus tells us not to worry about — like whether we will have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. But God knows the things we need, Every day He feeds the sparrows and cares for the wildflowers. How much more will He care for you? Instead of worrying, Jesus says to seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously. Then he will give you everything you need.
