Share Each Others Burdens

“Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

My older brother was always quick to jump in lend a helping hand. He would tell me, “If we work together, Sis, we will be more effective. Two can do the work of three.” Paul tells us in the next verse here in Galatians 6: “If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”

We all need help from time to time. And we all need to not think of ourselves as too important to help lift each other’s burdens. Burdens can be physical or spiritual. A burden is anything that threatens our faith, whether it’s a physical burden that threatens us to doubt God’s goodness or a sin that threatens to drag us off into guilt and condemnation.

But Christ never requires us to do on our own anything that he asks of us. Every command in the law of Christ is a call to faith. Our responsibility to one other is to encourage and lead each other away from wrong attitudes and habits as we point one another to Christ who is able to repair anything that is broken in us.

If you are looking for something to do with your life that will add significance and meaning, consider developing a skill for identifying the burdens of others, then commit your daily life to lifting those burdens. In this way you will obey the law of Christ, but you will also find a rewarding life that honors God.
