The Name Above Every Other Name

“Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

This verse begins with the word “therefore.” A good rule of thumb when studying the Bible is if you see the word, therefore, you better see what it’s there for. Paul is writing to the Philippian church. Based on what he already said, Paul says, “Therefore, God elevated him (Jesus) to the place of highest honor.”

In the previous verses, Paul describes the humility and obedience of Jesus, the Son of God, who set aside His divine privileges and took the humble position of a servant to pay the ultimate price for the disobedience of humanity. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names.

Jesus Christ is Lord, the supreme authority. He is:

  • The Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end (Rev. 22:13)

  • The Lamb of God (John 1:29)

  • Immanuel, God with us (Is. 7:14)

  • King of Kings (Rev. 17:14)

  • Our Great High Priest (Heb. 4:14)

  • Our Deliverer (1 Thess.1:10)

  • Our Mediator (1 Tim. 2:5)

  • Our Hope (1 Tim. 1:1)

  • Our Peace (Eph. 2:14)

  • Our Redeemer (Job 19:25)

  • Our Risen Lord (1 Cor. 15:3-4)

It is at the name of Jesus that every knee should bow and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord. The truth is Jesus Christ is Lord. The question is, is Jesus Christ your Lord?
