The Time to Seek Him

“Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6

There are two things that are obvious to me in this verse. First of all, the Lord of heaven can be sought by human beings. Secondly, and perhaps more important, He can be found. One reason we don’t experience more of the presence of God in our lives is because we are not actively looking for Him.

I was always losing things when I was a kid. When I would lose something, my mom would ask me, “Have you looked for it?” Sounds like a dumb question, but my mom knew me well. She knew that if something was missing, I would be likely to say I lost it rather than to go looking for it. That would require effort on my part.

Seeking the Lord requires effort. I’m convinced that if we could fully grasp the joy of experiencing the presence of the Lord, we would seek Him all the more. We have been given the great privilege of a personal relationship with the God who spoke the universe into existence and yet sometimes we don’t even look for Him. We don’t put forth the effort.

Isaiah says to look for the Lord while you can find Him. Unlike that missing library book or lost homework assignment, God can be found. If you seek Him you will find Him. God is not missing or hiding. He is waiting. He is waiting for you to look for Him. He will be found by you. But the offer is time-limited. You have to call on Him now while He is near. Seeking God is limited to this lifetime. There will come a day when there will be no more seeking. God is easily found, but the time to seek Him is now.
