Your Safe Place

“But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.” Psalm 59:16

Remarkably, this psalm was written regarding the time Saul sent soldiers to watch David’s house in order to kill him. If I were writing the psalm, it might say, “But as for me, I’ll be hiding in the closet if you need me.” But not David. The Lord had rescued him from a lion, a bear, and even a Philistine giant. David was not hiding, he was singing. He knew that his God was able to save and deliver him. “But as for me,” says David, “I will sing about your power.”

This psalm was not written during times of peace and prosperity, but during times of great distress. With soldiers watching his house, waiting to kill him, David lifts his voice to sing of God’s power. In an earlier psalm David writes, “I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side.” David knew that there was no other place he could find safety and protection than in the presence of the Lord. God was his refuge, and no matter the circumstances he would rise each morning and sing with joy about God’s unfailing love.

There’s a lot we can learn from David. When the storms of life threaten to knock you off your foundation, lift your voice. Remember the one who saved and delivered you. Sing about his power and his unfailing love. Let him be your refuge, your safe place in times of distress.
