Who God Is
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud.” 1 Corinthians 13:4
If you want to know what God is like, read 1 Corinthians 13. While 1 John tells us that God is love, 1 Corinthians gives us a behind-the-veil look at the character of God. Paul writes, “Love is patient, kind, not jealous (in the sense that we are jealous), boastful, filled with pride, or rude.” If God is love, then what we are reading is a description of what God is like. God is not only patient, kind, and all these things, but He does not demand his own way. He is never irritable and keeps no records of being wronged.
Stop and think about that for a minute. God keeps no records of being wronged. When God forgives you, He will never bring up your sin again. He will never say, “Remember the time you did this?” The Bible says “He remembers it no more” (Hebrews 8:12). It’s not that God ever really forgets, but He chooses to never, ever hold that sin against you again. You are free from the penalty of sin. It is covered by the blood of Jesus and, as far as God is concerned, it’s as good as forgotten.
In Paul’s description of love, we learn that God does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices when the truth wins out. He never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Would you be willing to put your entire faith and trust in God if you knew that He would never fail you? Paul tells us that love never fails. Love never fails because God never fails. This is the God who loved you enough to die for you.
Love.
This is who God is.
